Most common causes of traumatic brain injury

When it comes to injuries caused by accidents, one of the most feared is damage to the brain. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that each year, 2.5 million people experience a traumatic brain injury and are left to deal with the consequences, some of which are life-altering. There are several different types of accidents that can lead to a TBI.

A vast majority of brain injuries are caused by falls. While 40 percent of TBIs can be attributed to a fall, it generally only happens to very old or very young patients. More than 80 percent of brain injuries in adults occur when a person over the age of 65 falls. This group was also most likely to die from a TBI related to a fall. Over 50 percent of all brain trauma in children under the age of 14 is also caused by falls, and this group is most likely to be hospitalized for a TBI after a fall.

Traffic accidents

A leading cause of TBI is crashes involving motor vehicles. This can include accidents involving pedestrians, motorcycles, bicycles and passenger cars. While these account for 14 percent of all brain trauma, they are responsible for over one quarter of the deaths caused by TBI. Patients aged five to 24 years were the most likely to be killed by a brain injury sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

While falling is the leading cause of brain injury in older adults, assault is one of the least, with a TBI occurring in only 1.4 percent of those 65 or older as a result. Around 75 percent of brain injuries from assault affect patients between the ages of 15 and 44. Assault accounts for 10 percent of the total number of TBIs and is the number one cause of brain injury deaths for children under the age of four.

Blunt trauma

Around 15 percent of all brain injuries happen when a person is either struck by or against something. This is unintentional and often happens to children. Those under the age of 15 experienced TBIs from blunt trauma in almost one quarter of all reported brain injuries.

Among all causes of traumatic brain injuries, emergency room visits were highest for those under the age of four and hospitalization happened most often to those over the age of 65.
